Northeast Corridor Commuter Rail Project

Rendering of the proposed commuter rail system.

The Northeast Corridor (NEC) is a 13.5-mile commuter rail initiative along the existing FEC Railway/Brightline corridor, connecting Downtown Miami to Aventura through Wynwood, the Design District, Little Haiti, and communities in between. As the first segment of the 85-mile Coastal Link — and the most shovel-ready project in Miami-Dade’s SMART Plan — it is the foundation of a true regional transit network linking Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

The NEC Rail Project plugs into Metrorail, Metromover, Tri-Rail, and Brightline — establishing a true regional transportation network.  Federal funding is already in place; however, delay in county and state funding sources risks losing what is already secured.

Take Action Now: The Miami-Dade Commission will vote in July whether to fund this project. Without action, Miami will lose federal funding that is already committed — and this may be our last chance to connect Wynwood to the region by rail.

Economic Growth

World-class cities attract world-class businesses. Companies looking to relocate want reliable transit — it signals that a city is serious about its future.  Over 100,000 residents gain a real transit option — for many, that changes what jobs they can take, what schools they can reach, and what kind of life they can build.

Projects of this size and scope don’t come around often and can’t be passed up. The NEC Rail Project will catalyze thousands of new affordable housing units near stations — putting homes and jobs within reach of the same transit line.

A system like this also provides an accessible and affordable way for residents and visitors to get around Miami; 65,000 low-income residents will gain direct access to economic opportunity. Tickets will be affordable and similar to existing public transit.

  • Jobs/Economic Impact:
    • 23,500 non-recurring jobs
    • 2,458 permanent jobs
    • $282 million in annual labor income
    • $5.5 million in annual revenue for Miami-Dade County
    • $7.2 million in annual revenue for Miami-Dade Public Schools
  • Eco-friendly and car-free way to travel:
    • 1.45 million cars removed from roadways annually
    • Reduction in 3,644 metric tons of CO2

This project funds our future, not just our commute.

Sounds great. How can I get involved?
Click here to submit an email today to Miami-Dade Mayor and County Commissioners showing your support for the project.

It’s Now or Never: The existing rail corridor is real and ready – a vote on funding could come as early as mid-July 2026. This is the only mobility project in Miami-Dade with a short delivery window. If we lose this moment, it could be decades before Miami gets another opportunity.  Reach out to the County Commission today and tell them to approve the Northeast Corridor Commuter Rail Project.
